GUWAHATI: A division bench of the Gauhati High Court comprising Chief Justice AjaiLamba and Justice Manish Choudhury has asked the SIT (Special Investigation Team) to speed up the investigation of the suicide of Irrigation official Mathur Chandra Nath on November 26, 2012 and file the latest status report of the investigation to the court in sealed covers on or before August 24, 2020.

Two cases – one at Tezpur Police Station and the other at Dispur Police Station – were filed in connection with the Rs 270-crore irrigation scam that had been mentioned by Mathur Chandra Nath in his suicide note. The High Court that had registered a suo moto case (WP-C 1/2019) asked the Crime Branch to investigate the case (1816/2011) filed at Dispur Police Station. According to the order issued on June 12, 2020 the DCP (Crime) BarunPurkayastha had constituted the SIT consisting of ADCP (Crime) Nabneet Mahanta, SI(UB) Debojit Das, SI (UB) Aminul Islam, Havildar Ranjit Das and UBC Dharmendra Kalita, the High Court said. The affidavit further assured the court that Purkayastha would monitor the investigation. The case has been listed for September 1, 2020 for the next hearing.
