GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has asked the Advocate General of Assam to look into some suggestions regarding a permanent solution to the flood problem of Assam, which have been offered by a petitioner, and then apprise it about the progress made at the next date of hearing.
The petitioner, Sandeep Chamaria, is an advocate and he had filed a PIL seeking directions from the court for evolving a permanent solution to the flood problem of the State. Chamaria has suggested some immediate, some short-term and some long-term measures to evolve a permanent solution to the problem. These include construction of embankments and guard walls; river training and bank protection works; anti-erosion and town protection works; river channelization with pro-siltation device; drainage improvement/sluices; raised platforms; flood forecasting and warning; and flood zoning.
