Summer vacation a farce for teachers: Sadou Asom Sanmilita Shikshak Mancha

GUWAHATI: The Sadou Asom Sanmilita Shikshak Mancha (SASSM) has appealed to the elementary and secondary education secretaries to reconsider the decision that the teachers should take classes during the summer vacation. The Mancha said that the government should not make teachers accountable if any teacher cannot take a class during the summer vacation.

In its memorandum submitted to the two secretaries, the Mancha said, "If the teachers are to take classes during the summer vacation, there was no rationale behind advancing the summer vacation by five days. Even if flood water recedes in schools, the areas where teachers and students reside and the roads they use will remain submerged."

The Mancha alleged that the government was discriminating against the teachers from other government employees. It said, "Other government employees get 30 days EL (Earned Leave), but we get ten days EL only on the ground that we get summer vacations. However, the reality remains that teachers have to take classes and attend other government duties during the summer vacation like other government employees. Thereby, declaring the summer vacation has become a farce for teachers. Other government employees get holidays on second and fourth Saturdays, but the teachers do not. The teachers will not lose anything if the government abolishes the summer vacation and gives teachers 30 days EL and monthly two Saturdays as holidays like other employees. We want the government to provide us 30 days EL and two Saturdays monthly as holidays like other government employees."

The Mancha further said, "The notification issued on June 23, 2022, was misleading. The notification reads, 'the Secondary Education Department has decided to reschedule the summer vacation in all Elementary, Secondary, Senior Secondary and Higher Secondary Schools from June 25 to July 25…' The notification stops short of giving any clear-cut message on the summer vacation of higher secondary classes attached to colleges."
