GUWAHATI: Deepor Beel Suraksha Manch demanded the shifting of GMC’s dumping ground. During a press conference, Suraksha Mancha’s President, Henry David Teron, and Secretary Pramod Kalita said that their first demand is to shift the dumping ground from Belor Tol in West Boragaon as it is necessary for protecting the biodiversity of the wetland and the nearby residents.

They also demanded to take measures to stop the flow of polluted water into the wetland that is carried by the Mora Bharalu, Basistha, and Bahini rivers.

Furthermore, they have also opposed the construction of the double track railway line through the wetland. And in this regard, they have urged the government to rethink about its construction.

In the year 2002, Deepor Beel was announced to be a Ramsar Site, but there has been no clear demarcation of the area till date. So, they have urged that there should be a proper demarcation of the area.

Both the wetland’s biodiversity and the elephant population will be at risk from the construction of a double-track railway line. Even if the elevated corridor is built, the elephants will not have a certain level of safety.
