Symposium on bio-resources and renewable energy held

GUWAHATI, May 16: The Department of Bioscience, Asian Institute of Management and Technology (AIMT), Guwahati organized a one-day symposium on ‘Bio-resources and Renewable Energy’ recently with a view to discussing and learning about the utilization of the natural resources as an alternative to fossil fuels.

The resource persons and dignitaries delivering the key note address during the occasion were Prof D. K. Jha, Department of Botany, Gauhati University; Prof M. C. Kalita, Department of Biotechnology, Gauhati University; Associate Prof M. R. Khan, Institute of Advanced Studies in Science and Technology (IASST), Baragaon; and Assistant Prof Supriyo Sen, Department of Life Science, Assam Don Bosco University, Sonapur campus.

The speakers at the event expressed their views on world energy crisis, its increasing prices and constant deterioration of the environment. They also presented their ideas as to how these crises can be resolved in years ahead.

The dignitaries highlighted the role of microbes in biodiesel production by converting the biomass into various forms. The dignitaries observed that the region can be addressed as a geographical gateway for endemic flora as well as fauna. The conservation of the resources and their utilization with modern techniques can be a healthier substitute for fossil fuels and mitigation of greenhouse gas emission.

A number of students and research scholars from Assam Don Bosco University, Cotton University, Handique Girls’ College, B. Borooah College and Pandu College participated in the event.
