Symposium on “Draft National Education Policy 2019 & New India” organized at IIT Guwahati

Guwahati: One-Day Symposium on “Draft National Education Policy 2019 & New India” was organized jointly by Intellectual forum of North East and the Center of Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education (CESME) under Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT), IIT Guwahati in collaboration with Department of Higher Education, Govt. of Assam on 10th August 2019 at Center for Educational Technology IIT Guwahati to brainstorm on the various aspects of the policy.

Prof. Sunil Khijwania of the department of physics and Head, Center for Educational Technology (CET) and Prof. U. S. Dixit of the department of mechanical engineering were the coordinators from IIT Guwahati.

Governor of Assam Prof. Jagdish Mukhi inaugurated the symposium along with Director of IIT Guwahati, Prof T. G. Sitharam and Dr Atul Bora, Director (in-Charge) Technical Education of Assam.

Five vice-chancellors, director of four NITs, deans of IIT Guwahati and around sixty principals and head of the departments from various universities and colleges of north-eastern states of India participated in the symposium. Prof. Sunil Khijwania introduced the program and CESME, PMMMNMTT, IITG whereas Dr. Gargi Saikia, coordinator of the symposium from IFNE, introduction of the program from IFNE Governor of Assam Prof. Jagdish Mukhi stated that “Education is the backbone of the country’s progress and draft NEP 2019 aims to establish sustainable equity and vibrant knowledge in India.

Students will be given more flexibility to choose between Arts, Science and Vocational Studies. Higher education will be more multi-disciplinary with broad-based so that students can develop deeper expertise in one or more subjects. He also mentioned that NEP 2019 has a liberal approach which can confirm to the diversity of the education system. The draft NEP 2019 will also focus on quality research.

He also mentioned that Rashtriya Shoksha Aayog will be created.” Previously, Director, IIT Guwahati Prof. T. G. Sitharam welcomed Governor of Assam Prof. Jagdish Mukhi and all the dignitaries who joined the symposium.

He highlighted major policy proposals of draft NEP 2019 such as several new policy initiatives for promoting internalization of higher education, strengthening quality open and distance learning, technology integration at all the levels of education. He mentioned that the path breaking reforms recommended will bring about a paradigm shift by equipping our students, teachers and educational institutions with the right competencies and capabilities and also create an enabling and reinvigorated educational eco-system for a vibrant new India.

Prof. TG Sitharam also highlighted major academic achievements of IIT Guwahati and its commitment for integrating itself to NER states in order to facilitate academic excellence for entire north-east. He highlighted that soon, IITG is starting Young Engineer’s Program for NE states and Sikkim. Intellectual Forum of North East Center for Excellence in Science & Mathematics Education, PMMMNMTT CET, IIT Guwahati Government of Assam Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Registrar Gauhati University delivered the keynote lecture; whereas Prof. Hemanta Kumar Baruah, Ex Vice-Chancellor Bodoland University, Prof. (Dr.) S. P. Singh, ViceChancellor Royal Global University, Prof. Polly Vauquline, Associate Professor Gauhati University, Dr. Dayanada Borgohain Chairman, Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath, Vice-Chancellor, Assam University, Silchar, Dr. Dulumoni Goswami, Education Department, Gauhati University, Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Registrar, Gauhati University, Prof. Bibhash Chandra Nath Purkayastha, Vice President, Bharatiya Shikshan Mandal and Dr. Atul Bora, Director (in-charge), Technical Education, Govt of Assam delivered lectures and conducted brainstorming session during the symposium. Finally, Prof Nani Gopal Mahanta summarized the proceedings of the symposium. symposium ended with vote of thanks.
