Tackling Unemployment: SEBA to Introduce Special Chapter on Career Counseling

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: With an aim to enable the future generation to tackle the unemployment problem the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) has decided to introduce a special chapter on academic/career counselling for the students in the English textbook from next year.

Even though the chapter will not be a part of the curriculum, the teachers and students will be encouraged to discuss the same in the classroom. The chapter will contain information about various streams of study, courses available after Class X, higher secondary, degree and post-graduation and job opportunities.

“SEBA wants to make available all the basic information about the study and career opportunities to every student through the proposed chapter to prepare students well in advance to face the challenges of the highly competitive age,” a board official said.

The official said nearly four lakh students sit for the HSLC or matric examination every year and many of them come out with flying colours. He said in the long run majority of students end up in facing the unemployment problem.

The SEBA last year introduced employment-oriented subjects like healthcare, private security, agriculture and horticulture. In order to develop entrepreneurial skill among the students from a young age, the board will include a chapter on entrepreneurship in all the vocational courses. On other hand the SEBA will introduce textbooks for commerce for the IX and X classes from 2020 and 2021 respectively. “The basic knowledge of commerce like banking, accountancy, insurance, etc., is the need of the hour for every student,” the official said.
