Tai Ahom bodies condemn Oram’s statement

Guwahati, June 17: The Kamrup (M) district committee of Tai Ahom Mahila Parishad has vehemently condemned the recent statement made by Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Jewel Oram. Significantly, in the matter of the long standing demand of six communities of Assam for ST status, Oram said that resolving such issues could take as long as forty years. Coming down heavily on the union Minister, the Parishad president Kalpana Gogoi and general secretary Janmoni Gogoi said that it was highly irresponsible on the part of a Union Minister to make such comments.

The district committee of the Parishad held an executive meeting on Monday where the issue was deliberated. The meeting held the view that the demand of six communities, including the Tai Ahom community is genuine. Mridul Konwar, president of Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, the youth wing of the Parishad, has also condemned the statement made by Union Minister Oram.

Meanwhile, spokesperson of the women’s wing Moonmi Konwar has informed that the Parishad will provide financial aid to Tai Ahom poor students who passed the recent HSLC examination. She also informed that a workshop on Tai language and culture will be held in Guwahati soon.
