Tai Ahom bodies oppose movement in Guwahati

GUWAHATI, July 26: Several Tai Ahom bodies of the State are up in arms against the Assam Government’s decision to merge the State Historical and Antiquarian department with the State Museum. The organizations are Purvanchal Tai Xahitya Xabha, Ahom Xabha , Sodou Tai-Ahom Chatra Santha , Tai-Ahom Juba Parishad, Asom , Mohan Dewdhai Bailung Sanmilan and Poi Fruralung Moong Asom Sanmilan.

Vehemently opposing the move of the Government at a meeting of the organizations in Guwahati today, it was pointed out that the Historical and antiquarian department contains items dating back from 1228 to 1836 and clearly depicts the history of the Ahom period.

On the contrary, the organizations are demanding that the department be modernized and a full fledged director be appointed for proper functioning of the department. The organizations have also resolved at the meeting that the Bogibeel Bridge be christened as after Chowlang Sui-ka-Pha Setu after the first Ahom king Sui-ka-Pha.
