GUWAHATI, July 10: “Instead of safeguarding the land rights of the indigenous people in the State, the State Government is privileging the corporate giants to occupy vast land reserves. That’s why the State government could arrange acres of land at Sonitpur district for the Ramdev-owned Patanjali Herbal for setting up manufacturing units,” said the Tai Ahom Mohila Parishad (TAMP), Assam in a protest meeting held at the Sukafa Bhawan in Guwahati on Tuesday.

During the meeting organized by the Kamrup (M) district committee, the women body of the Tai Ahom community also questioned as to why the State Government has been maintaining a mysterious silence over the alleged large-scale encroachment at Deepor Beel and Silsako Beel. Expressing concern over the growing numbers of landless indigenous people in the State, the executives of the body demanded the State government to allot land to the landless at the earliest. The meeting was attended by TAMP’s Kamrup (M) district Committee president Kalpana Gogoi, general secretary Janmoni Gogoi, along with other executive members.
