Tarun Gogoi 'asymptomatic' and doing fine: GMCH Superintendent Abhijit Sarma

Guwahati: Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Superintendent Dr. Abhijit Sarma today said the former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi, who had earlier tested positive for the coronavirus, is now on the path towards recovering from the respiratory illness.

"Tarun Gogoi is now doing well, he is asymptomatic. His saturation is around 92-93%, and he is now on 1.5 L of oxygen, which is a piece of good news, Sarma told The Sentinel Digital.

Sarma added that Gogoi will be tested yet again tomorrow, and could be potentially released within 3-4 days if his result comes 'negative'. "He is stable and well," Sarma added.

The GMCH Superintendent further added that politicians Topon Kumar Gogoi and Ajanta Neog are also doing well. "We are now waiting for the reports of Ajanta Neog and Ramendra Narayan Kalita. If they test negative for the virus, they shall both be released today."

Commenting on the health of the political figures admitted to the GMCH after tested positive for the virus, Sarma said that "overall the MLAs admitted in the GMCH are doing well."

He admitted that more "symptomatic" cases are coming into the hospital in recent times, asserting that the facilities are yet to be stretched to the fullest. "We are not strained for resources. The number of patients who are being admitted and released on the same given day is more or less the same. We are admitting around 5 patients daily, and releasing the same number", he said, adding that more beds are being added "to stay on the safer side."

The GMCH Principal also urged people to take safety measures such as wearing masks and practicing social distancing. "Yesterday, I saw crowds thronging the market place where so many of the rules went for an absolute toss. This should not be the case," he opined.
