Tarun Gogoi Punches Holes in Ruling BJP’s Claim of Graft-Free Assam

GUWAHATI: Punching a hole in the ruling BJP tall claim to create a corruption-free Assam, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday dared present Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to disclose sources of funding their costly helicopter tours across the State to campaign for the ensuing Panchayat polls.

“Both Sonowal and Sarma are constantly flying through helicopters to hold election rallies in different parts of the State. Who are funding such expensive helicopter tours? The ruling party has now forgotten their main issue of making Assam free from illegal foreigners. There are reports that the party has even managed to get a huge plot of land in the city,” Tarun Gogoi told reporters here on Thursday.

The three-time former minister Gogoi dared Sonowal to show his firmness and determination to root out corruption from the State by instituting probes against graft charges in Missing, Tiwa and Karbi Anglong autonomous councils. “I will salute Sonowal if he could institute such probes,” Gogoi said.

Rejecting the BJP’s allegation of massive corruption in Panchayats during the previous Congress regime, Gogoi questioned as what had stopped the ruling party to conduct inquiries against such corrupt Congress Panchayat members during its last two and half years regime in the State.

Gogoi even attacked Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma by branding him the most power hungry politician in the State. “Who is the real number 1 man in command in the present government? Is it Sonowal or Sarma? It seems Sarma is the real number 1 man right now,” he said. Gogoi said the ruling party in order to cover its utter failures to bring about the desired changes in the State has launched a vitriolic attack on the Congress and others including their alliance partner AGP on different issues. “The people will soon come to know whether attack on AGP by BJP was real or drama. If the AGP remains with the present government even after such insulting attack by the BJP, it will be clear that the AGP is nothing but a power hungry party,” Gogoi said.

On the issue of proposed inauguration of Bogibeel bridge over the Brahmaputra, Gogoi said former Prime Minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee had no contribution towards construction of the Bogibeel bridge. “It was me who put pressure on Vajpayee for construction of the bridge. Former PM Dr Manmohan Singh has more contributions towards Bogibeel bridge construction. Things will be clearer if one goes through the data on funds by various governments at the Centre for the Bogibeel project,” Gogoi said.
