GUWAHATI: The Department of Information and Public Relations organised an event at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan Park of the city to commemorate the Desh Bhakti Divas. The event was attended by Minister Pijush Hazarika as the chief guest. He spoke about the efforts of Tarun Ram Phukan and Gopinath Bordoloi towards preventing Assam from becoming a part of Pakistan.

The dignitaries, family members, and other people paid their homage at the statue of the hero located in the park. Thereafter, the minister spoke about the efforts of the freedom fighters towards the freedom struggle and mentioned his love for the nation. He also mentioned how the efforts and ideologies of the leader made him a favourite of Mahatma Gandhi.

During the speech, he added that after the formation of the Assembly in Assam in 1937, the government was formed under the leadership of Syed Muhammad Saadulla, who later joined the Muslim League and conspired from the beginning to bring Muslim migrants from Bengal to Assam. The minister said leaders like Tarun Ram Phukan and Gopinath Bordoloi understood from the outset the conspiracy of Syed Shadullah to make Assam a Muslim-dominated state and include it in Pakistan, and they strongly opposed it.

The minister also announced that from the coming year onwards, an essay competition will be organized to mark the day, and the best essays will be awarded at the centrally organized event. He added that the winning essays will be compiled and published as a book by his department, as this step will encourage the youth of the state to learn more about the values of their lives. It can be noted that since 2021, the Himanta Biswa Sharma-led Assam government has been celebrating the death anniversary of the leader as the Desh Bhakti Divas across the state.

Several family members of the freedom fighter were present for the event and were felicitated by the dignitaries.

The Kamrup Metropolitan District Administration and the District Information and Public Relations officials also organised Desh Bhakti Dibas on the premises of the DC office in Guwahati and paid their respects to the freedom fighter. The event was chaired by DC Pallab Gopal Jha, and several other officials participated in it. They remembered the hero and paid floral tributes.
