GUWAHATI: The Tea Board India called a meeting with stakeholders of Darjeeling, Assam Tea Industry, in Kolkata that was held on January 6 in the presence of Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Government of India; Amardeep Singh Bhatia, IAS; Additional Secretary Plantations, Ministry of Commerce & Industry; and Sourav Pahari, IAS Dy Chairman, Tea Board India.

Almost all tea associations, like ITA, TAI, NETA, DTA, and others, were present in the meeting. The Confederation of Indian Small Tea Growers Associations (CISTA) in their representation gave suggestions for a green leaf fair price mechanism, Prime Minister Farmer welfare schemes implementation for small tea growers, a dedicated fund for small tea growers training, an awareness campaign, branding, and marketing of STG Tea.

CISTA conveyed sincere thanks and gratitude to the Union Minister for his patient hearing and proactive role in solving the problems. Small tea cultivation is nothing like agriculture, but STGs have not benefited from any PM farmers welfare schemes till date.

Goyal advised CISTA to identify the schemes that would be helpful for STGS and send them to the Ministry. CISTA welcomes the tea industry decision related to 100% dust tea sale through auction only from 14 no sale (April 24) in an experimental basis of 3 months. The minister directed to form a five-member committee to conduct the auction, stated a press release.
