Tea Estate owner convicted for theft of electricity

GUWAHATI, May 29: In a rare instance, the proprietor of M/s Gillapukhuri Tea Estate, Tinsukia Deoki Nandan Kanoi was convicted for theft of electricity on May 22. In a release, the Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd said that an incident of theft of electricity in Gillapukhuri TE under Tinsukia electrical circle was detected during routine inspection on November 1, 2007. An FIR was lodged at Tinsukia police station and subsequently a case was registered in the Court of Additional District and Session Judge, Tinsukia.

Taking note of the age of the accused and considering the nature of the offence, Kanoi was sentenced to pay an amount of fine of Rs 50,000 besides four months simple imprisonment under U/S 135 Electricity Act 2003 on May 22.
