Guwahati: The Minister of Department of Welfare of Plain Tribes & Backward Classes, Chandan Brahma in a query raised by the AIUDF MLA Mamun Imdadul Haque Chawdhury before the August house of the Assam Legislative Assembly stated that there are around 14 recognized Plain Tribe communities, 15 Hills Tribe communities and 16 recognized Scheduled Caste communities in the state.
While presenting the data in List 1, the minister informed that the lists of 16 Scheduled Caste communities in the state are:-
- Bansfor
- Bhuinmali, Mali
- Brittial, Banik, Bania
- Dhupi, Dhubi
- Dugla, Dholi
- Hira
- Jalkot
- Jhalo, Malo, Jhalo-Malo
- Kaibort, Jalia
- Lalbegi
- Mahara
- Mehtar, Bhangi
- Muchi, Rishi
- Namasudra
- Patni
- Sutradhar.
Similarly, he also presented the data of the list of ST (in Autonomous Districts)

- Hajong
- Hmar
- Khasi, Jaintia, Shantong, Panor, War, Bhoi, Lyngngam
