GUWAHATI: Azara Police on Saturday arrested three persons in connection with the violent incidents that took place at the polling station set up in the premises of Majali Primary School, Dharapur under West Guwahati Constituency. The incident occured in the evening of April 6 — when polling was held for the third and final phase of State Assembly election.

The three arrested persons are Masum Ali (26 years), Moinul Ali (40 years) — both residents of Majali; and Faizuddin Ali (26 years) of Goroimari.

Mentionably after the conclusion of voting process in the polling station in the evening of April 6, as steps were taken to shift the EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) to the strong room, a section of the local public created a ruckus on noticing extra EVMs in the vehicle of the Sector Officer. The officer tried to make the irate public understand that the extra EVMs were exclusively meant to be used in emergency situations. However, the public refused to accept his explanation. Things came to such a pass that some among the protesting public resorted to violent activities in which the vehicle of the Sector Officer also got damaged.

Subsequently, additional forces from the Azara Police Station rushed to the spot. Meanwhile, a number of security forces suffered injuries when some people pelted stones on the personnel. To bring the situation under control, the security forces resorted to blank firing. Subsequently, the Police registered a case (227/21) in this regard.
