Three held in Sonapur for illegal trade of foreign made cigarettes, Case Registered

Guwahati: Under the aegis of Assistant Commissioner of Police Sonapur Deepjyoti Talukdar on Monday morning, a Manipur Private bus bearing registration number MN 01BA 0011 was detained and several cartons carrying foreign-made cigarettes and shoes were seized during the operation.

As per police reports, around 89 cartons have been seized by the Sonapur Police and no valid challans were recovered during the investigation process.

Speaking to The Sentinel Digital, the officer in charge, Sonapur Police Station, Jyoti Handique said that we have recovered 57 cartons of foreign-made shoes, 27 cartons of WIN cigarettes, two cartons of Marlboro cigarettes, one carton of Esse Lights cigarettes, two cartons of Paris cigarettes from the bus. The bus drivers and handyman had failed to produce proper challans during the recovery of the items and were arrested on the spot."

The officer in charge also informed that two drivers and one handyman were arrested during the operation.

A case has been registered in connection to the matter (Case No 128/19). The drivers and handyman were booked under section 379/411 of the Indian Penal Code.

Further investigations are on.
