GUWAHATI: In a bid to boost business activities in rural areas, the State Government has implemented the Cabinet decision of March 7 this year, whereby it was decided to allow certain businesses to operate without trade licences under panchayat areas of the State.

A Notification issued by the Panchayat & Rural Department stated that the Governor of Assam "has approved the decision to rescind the existing requirement of issuance of trade licences and suspend the levy or imposition of any tax or fee by Gaon Panchayat, Anchalik Panchayat and Zilla Parishad in setting up of new business activities, shops etc."

However, the Notification mentioned that this exemption will not be applicable in case of foreign or country liquor shops, educational institutions, health establishments, brick kilns, mobile towers, petrol pumps, timber saw mills, godowns and pollutant industries.
