GUWAHATI, July 9: The Bhangagarh police arrested a fellow traffic constable identified as Nikunja Bhuyan on Sunday allegedly for looting a sum of Rs 18 lakh from a cattle trader being involved with four others.

According to police source, a cattle trader from Huntoli of Kamrup district Abdul Malik sent his three workers along with cash Rs 18 lakh to 9th Mile on June 25. The trio got off from the bus at Mackhowa, hired an auto rickshaw bearing registration no AS01DD-3475 from there and kept heading towards Khanapara. In the meantime, traffic constable, who was later identified as Nikunja Bhuyan stopped them at ABC and he himself occupied the front seat of the auto and asked to keep moving. However, on reaching at Christianbasti constable Bhuyan snatched the key of the auto and deserted the spot. Meanwhile, an Alto car bearing registration no AS01BU-0425 arrived on the spot packed with four miscreants inside it and forcefully took the trio under their captive and headed towards Lakhara. Apparently, they looted the entire amount at Lakhara from the trio and fled away immediately. Mysteriously, no one came forward to report the incident to the police. It was only on July 6 that the victims lodged an FIR at Bhangagarh police station following which the police stared investigation and arrested the traffic constable Nikunja Bhuyan on July 8. On getting circumstantial evidence against the cop, he was immediately sent to jail. However, further investigation is on to nab the others involved with the case.
