GUWAHATI: The two-day conclave on the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 held at Assam Administrative Staff College concluded on Friday, where Governor Gulab Chand Kataria made a fervent appeal to all stakeholder groups to take special steps to make Assam a model for the implementation of NEP 2020. Speaking at the valedictory function of the conclave, the governor said that the government of Assam had already launched this policy for higher education on June 3. Now, steps are being taken to roll out this policy comprehensively to address the needs of students at all levels. Governor Kataria said that during the last two days, the experts present in the conclave identified obstacles and problems in the implementation of the new education policy.

The governor also said that as a strategy for the implementation of NEP 2020, vocational and skill education would also get the desired and deserved place in the state. Referring to earlier education policies in the country, namely the Kothari Commission of 1966 and the Education Policy of 1986, the Governor said that both policies failed to place much emphasis on vocational and skill-based education.

The Governor also requested that the heads of all institutions ensure that vocational education has a respectable place in their core curriculum. He also asked them to impart adequate knowledge of "Lok Vidya" (traditional knowledge) to the students. As a part of the greater strategy for the implementation of NEP 2020, he also asked all the stakeholders of the education system of the state to ensure access, equity, and inclusiveness so that even the most socially disadvantaged groups are not deprived of education, namely elementary, secondary, and higher education.

Governor Kataria also said that as an important mandate of NEP 2020, steps will be taken to increase the gross enrollment ratio (GER) in higher education to 50 per cent by 2035 in the state. Kataria also advocated for innovation, incubation, and skill development to improve the positions of educational institutions under the National Institutional Ranking Framework. Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Adviser to Education, Government of Assam Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Adviser to Governor’s Secretariat Prof. Mihir Kanti Chowdhury, Addl.Chief Secretary, Govt. of Assam Biswaranjan Samal, Commissioner and Secretary to Governor SS Meenakshi Sundaram, Vice Chancellors of different universities, academia, and experts from across the country were present during the conclave, stated a press release.
