GUWAHATI: Assam will soon get two regional forensic laboratories. By next year, two regional forensic labs will become functional – one at Silchar and the other at Bongaigaon.

During a recent meeting of the State cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, it was decided to set up four new forensic laboratories at Dibrugarh, Silchar, Tezpur and Bongaigaon. Close on the heels of this decision, civil work has started on the two regional forensic laboratories. While the lab in Silchar will be set up on a 3,000-sq km area in the premises of Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), the lab in Bongaigaon will come up on a 2,500-sq km area in the premises of Bongaigaon Police Reserve.

The forensic laboratory in Silchar will have two divisions – chemical and biological. The chemical division will cater to the examination of drugs and toxicology while the biological division will cater to the examination of biological tissues such and blood and semen.

The forensic laboratory in Bongaigaon will have two divisions – chemical and physical. The physical division will cater to the examination of physical evidence like documents and cyber forensics.

Both the forensic laboratories will operate under the Directorate of Forensic Science, Assam. After these two forensic laboratories start functioning, it is expected that the workload on the forensic laboratory in Guwahati will be reduced to a great extent.
