Ugratara Theft: Police yet to recover idol

GUWAHATI : More than a fortnight after the sensational theft at historic Ugratara Devalaya at Uzan Bazar the police has failed to recover the ashtadhatu (a blend of eight precious metals) idol and other precious ornaments which were taken away by a gang if thieves. The Special Investigation Team constituted to probe the theft, on Thursday at the scrap dealer located at Sabipul under Bharalumukh police station and Borsola Beel under Paltan Bazar police station to find out the ashtadhatu and other precious ornaments. According to a police source, the accused so far arrested, confessed to the police that they carried the stolen articles, including the main idol wrapping in a gunny bag on November 17 from Ugratara Devalaya and handed over to another accused Tinku Ali who works at a scrap dealer located at Sabipul under Bharalumukh police station. The accused then negotiated and confirmed a deal for selling the articles with Tinku Ali at Rs 7000. Accordingly, Tinku finally received and kept the bag containing the article in a corner of the dealer. But the police is now confused after not finding theft materials at the site pointed out by Tinku.
