United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) delegation meets Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal ,assures support in programme implementation

GUWAHATI: A delegation of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), State Outreach Mission led by its team leader Jakob J Simonsen met Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at Brahmaputra State Guest House here on Friday and discussed various issues related to the implementation of welfare schemes of the government.

During the discussion, Jakob Simonsen informed the Chief Minister that UNDP has been extending support to the Government of India since 1952 regarding implementation, monitoring and evaluation of various welfare schemes in different parts of the country. He said that the UN agency has presently changed its operational methods and decentralized the entire process. Accordingly, UNDP now extends expert advice to the State Governments also in the implementation and monitoring of the programmes.

Stating that UNDP is closely working with the Union Government in the execution of PM Awas Yojana in the country, Simonsen further expressed the interest of the UN agency in partnering with the Government of Assam in its implementation of welfare schemes. Further saying that the Act East Policy of the Central Government places Assam at an advantageous position in terms of development, he also assured to provide necessary support to the State Government in implementation of its welfare schemes. The Chief Minister appreciating the support extended by UNDP urged the delegation to offer technical guidance to the State Government Departments in implementation of the projects. He requested them to help in monitoring and evaluation of different programmes and schemes being undertaken by Health, Education, Social Welfare, P&RD Department in the State.

Chief Secretary Alok Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) Rajiv Bora, Chief Minister’s Principal Secretary Sanjay Lohiya and other senior officials of the State Government were present during the visit of the delegation. The UNDP delegation led by Simonsen included Rakesh Kumar, BP Pandey, Claudio Providas, Manish Pant, John Borgoyari, Mayank Aggarwal and Supriya Khound, a communiqué said.
