Unnatural death of 10 ducks at Ugratara Temple raised concern, Trust appeals for Government Support

Guwahati: In a shocking incident, at least 8-10 ducks at Ugratara Temple died within just 48 hours. As per sources, the cause of the unnatural death of the ducks was due to lack of proper meal, health issues including proper maintenance of the birds by the Temple authorities.

Situated at the eastern part of the Guwahati city in Uzan Bazar near Latasil Playground, Ugratara is an ancient Shakti temple. Dedicated to Goddess Sati Devi, the 1st partner of Lord Shiva. The temple is flocked by several religious tourists and local inhabitants annually.

Beside the temple, lies the famous Jur Pukhuri where several ducks had died all of a sudden on Wednesday. The matter has raised concern among the authorities.

Speaking to the media, one of the Trust Member of Ugratara Temple, Parameshwar Sarma said that the ducks, endangered species of turtles, pigeons etc. are not being provided proper food diets.

The temple authorities also mentioned that since there has been no proper Government assistance to the Shakti Temple, the management had failed to protect the mortality rates of ducks, turtles and pigeons in the area.

Also, on being contacted a senior Animal Activist and Secretary of Help Earth Society, Jayaaditya Purkayastha said, "Both the ducks and turtles are an important part of the ecosystem. In terms of conservation level, the turtle is one of the most important species. Jur Pukhuri at Ugratara Temple is famous for its Black Softshell Turtle which is one of the rarest species in the world. On the other hand, the sudden death of 10 ducks is a matter of concern and we will surely get into contact with the authorities in order to come out to a solution in this matter. This is one of the rarest cases and will need verification. I also doubt that the ducks might be suffering from viral diseases."

Purkayastha also suggested to segregate the ducks and turtles from Jur Pukhuri and use the other side of the pond near Ugratara Temple in order to protect both the species. "Prioritization is also important in this case and we are also coordinating with the District Level authorities and we ready to provide voluntarily help to the Ugratara Temple authorities if needed," added Purkayastha.
