GUWAHATI, May 23: The valedictory function on Oil Urja -Fuel Efficient Clean Energy, a CSR Programme of Oil India Limited and implemented by Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE) was held at IIE Lalmati campus.

While speaking on the occasion Dr. Abhijit Sharma, Director, IIE said, “More focus has to be made for sustainable economic growth through clean energy solution by collaborative efforts of OIL and IIE in the most backward tea garden areas of Assam”.

Elaborating on “Oil Urja” Pranjit Deka, Executive Director (HR&A), Oil India Limited said, “OIL provided 3000 free customized chullah chimney unit to each household. This was the first time that the especially prepared chimney was installed in the kitchen of the beneficiaries which helped to create a smoke-free environment in the otherwise firewood smoke-filled kitchen. This unit helped in the reduction of cooking time, reducing kitchen air pollution and most importantly lead to the reduction of fuel wood consumption generally used by the tea garden workers”.

Dr Sriparna B Baruah, Head CIE who was leading the OIL Urja Project said “Approximately 15000 tea garden workers have been benefitted from this programme of which 5017 are children and 7814 are women members of the community. Most of these beneficiaries are from the lowest income category with a monthly average income of less than Rs.3500. This project also helped to create 20 tea garden youths to develop as entrepreneurs with skill in chullah chimney making through training and capacity building”.

The project included workers from six tea gardens of Tinsukia and Dibrugarh district that includes Balijan, Mukalbari, Thanai, Nalani, Baghjan and Dighalturrung. Others also attending the programme were officials from IIE, ICCO and beneficiaries of six tea gardens of surrounding project areas.
