Various farmer associations submit memorandum to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal

GUWAHATI: Various farmer associations of the State submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal demanding compensation for the farmers who are affected by lockdown due to coronavirus.

The bodies including Krishak Mahasabha, Nikhil Bharat Krishak Sabha (Assam State), Jeepal Krishak Shramik Sangha stated that the farmers who earn their living by farming are unable to sell their products due to the lockdown. Hence, most of the farmers are facing huge losses as they have to dispose the rotten goods. They are in a state of financial crisis.

The associations further claimed that the small tea growers who contribute 17 % to the total tea production of the State are suffering huge losses as they are not able to pluck leafs due to lockdown.

Besides claiming loss of the small farmers, the associations also stated that due to lockdown the daily wage of many poor villagers have completely been shut down resulting in food crisis. They claimed in unison that the poor villagers, farmers and daily wage earners will not be able to survive by receiving a little aid from the government.

The associations also raised a few other demands before the Chief Minister and asked for compensation by conducting a survey. Their other demands include - onetime aid of Rs. 10,000 for those farmers engaged in piggery and chicken farming, to provide the amount for green tea leaves to every small tea growers and to introduce measures to financially assist the farmers.
