Voters Have Rejected Strange Bedfellows: BJP

GUWAHATI: Coalition partners at Disiur, but arch rivals in the ongoing rural poll battle in the field! This is the kind of relationship which the ruling BJP and its ally AGP are sharing now.

In the run-up to the second phase of panchayat poll as well, the BJP has targeted the AGP. The BJP has said that the lust of power has made the AGP align with the Congress and the AIUDF in the panchayat poll now. The BJP says that the Congress is corrupt, the AIUDF is dangerous and the AGP is betrayal.

Talking to the media at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati on Thursday, State BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami said: “In the past 15 years, the Congress only decentralized corruption in rural Assam. In its ten-year rule in the State, the AGP didn’t hold any panchayat poll in the State. However, we’re holding this panchayat poll within two-and-a-half years of coming to power in the State. This is because we want real decentralization of power and development of rural areas through a transparent administration. The people have come to know the infrastructure development taken place in the past two-and-a-half years, implementation of welfare schemes in the State. This has led to a heavy voters’ turnout of 80 per cent in the first phase of the panchayat poll.”

Goswami said: “The AGP severed the ties with us only to align with the Congress and the AIUDF in a clandestine way. This is unfortunate. The AGP will be known for its betrayal. While in power, the AGP made heaps of promises but never bothered to keep them. The people of the State had to vote out the party for ignoring the promises it had made. The lust of power did fragment the regional party into the NAGP, TGP and the AGP (P). And now they rub their shoulders with leaders of the Congress and the AIUDF for power. With this the party has betrayed the people who trusted them. However, in the first phase of this panchayat poll, the voters have rejected these strange bedfellows.”
