Water project for GMC Narakasur Hill residents remains in limbo

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: A certain society at GMC Narakasur hill in the Kamalanagar Gaon area has been suffering from severe dearth of water for decades now while the authorities turn mute spectators.

Gammon India was entrusted with the responsibility of constructing a water tank that could provide water for almost 20 thousand people, however, due to lack of funds, the project was stalled.

The area even to this date remains underdeveloped and there are just two wells and two falls (jharna) in the entire locality from where the entire society collects water. However, during rainy season, the route to these water sources gets dangerous and the people suffer from lack of drinking water as well as water for utility.

Local resident Shankar Sarkar said, “The entire society is under acute water crisis for years now. We have approached the Guwahati Municipal Board as well as the Jal Board but received no response. While even minister Siddhartha Bhattacharjya arrived and spoke of remedying our issue, nothing has been done till date as no one understands our predicament. Even the equipments used for the water tank construction by Gammon have been stolen while the half-constructed project remains as an eye-sore, collecting dust.”

It is hard to comprehend that a locality in the middle of bustling Guwahati remains so backward that people have to suffer for a drop of water. The questions remain, what could be the cause of such blatant negligence and who would take responsibility of the crisis?
