We must respect rivers: Keshab Mahanta

GUWAHATI, Sept 20: “Assam is endowed with enormous water resources - large rivers and other water bodies -with the rich aquifer speak about vastness of the State’s water resource. We need to cope with challenging and complex flooding and riverbank erosion problems in the Brahmaputra floodplains with a comprehensive approach. The bottom-line of flood management in Assam is to manage rivers without disturbing and creating imbalance of nature; we must respect rivers,” said Water Resource Minister Keshab Mahanta.

Mahanta was speaking in the monthly intellectual dialogue of North East Institute of Advanced Studies (Northeast-IAS) here on Thursday. The Northeast-IAS has been hosting important personalities of the North-eastern region to speak in this monthly discussion series - Manthan - and initiating a healthy debate and constructive dialogues to resolve age-old socio-economic issues of Assam and the North-east, a release said.
