When Cheaters Get The Better of Others

GUWAHATI: Is Assam a haven for cheaters? The rising trend of cheating cases paints the State such a picture. And statistics of cheating cases registered in the State also gives such an impression that does not augur well for the State.

The statistics of cheating cases that have taken place in the State since 2011 show that the ‘cheating graph’ keeps on rising. If the trend is allowed to continue, the State may be tagged as a haven for cheaters. The number of cheating cases registered in various police stations in the State from 2011 to 2018 is 27,942. Cheaters of diverse hues are on the prowl in the State. The newest class of cheaters who have emerged in the scene comprise cybercriminals.

According to police sources, as many as 1,453 cheating cases were registered in all police stations in the State in 2011. What’s worrisome is that instead of the number of cheating cases declining, it increased to 1,693 in 2012. And cheaters, it seems, opted not to look back since then. They kept on moving ahead. While as many as 2,607 cheating cases were registered in 2013, 2916 cases were registered in 2014, 3781 cases in 2015, 4195 cases in 2016, 5,449 cases in 2017 and 5848 cases in 2018.

The ascending cheating graph in the State shows that cheaters have been able to get the better of the people who they cheat and the police who they want to dodge. Such a situation does not hold good for a State that’s being projected as the gateway to the South East Asia, let alone the Gateway to the Northeast. This also does not augur well for a State that has a number of scenic spots to woo tourists, both domestic and foreign ones. If Assam is tagged as a haven for cheaters, it will certainly have it cascading effects on other States of the Northeast as well as Assam if their common doorway.
