Winning prospect Only Criterion For BJP Tickets For Lok Sabha Elections

GUWAHATI: Getting BJP tickets for the Lok Sabha elections from Assam in 2019 can never be a cakewalk for any of the aspiring candidates, including the sitting parliamentarians. The party that has its eyes set on ten of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the State is trying its best to give party tickets only to candidates with maximum winning prospects.

From January, the party in Assam is going to start a survey to ascertain the winning prospects of the aspiring candidates. The party is to be driven purely based on the report of the survey. Even as the high command in the party will have its last say on candidatures in Assam, the high command will also be driven by the report of the survey.

Talking to the media, State BJP president Ranjit Kumar Dass said: “The selection of candidates for the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam will start from the first half of January 2019. We’re going to start a survey to ascertain the winning prospects and weaknesses of aspiring candidates vis-a-vis their constituencies. We’ll send reports of the survey to the party high command. The high command is to take the final decision on party tickets in consultation with the survey reports.”

In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, while the BJP won seven of the 14 seats in Assam, the Congress and the AIUDF won three each. One seat went to an independent candidate. The survey results may even go against the sitting MPs.
