GUWAHATI: On the basis of a specific complaint, a team of the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam on Thursday arrested one Papori Mehta, a senior assistant in the Agriculture Department, Janata Bhawan, from Athgaon here after catching her red-handed while she was accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from a person.

According to sources, a woman lodged a complaint that Papori Mehta had demanded a bribe of Rs 1 lakh for processing a proposal for appointment of the complainant on compassionate ground in the Agriculture Department. The husband of the complainant, who was a driver in the Agriculture Department, had died and the complainant had applied for appointment on compassionate ground.

The sources said that Mehta asked the complainant to come to Athgaon and hand over the first instalment of the demanded bribe on Thursday.

The bribe amount was recovered from Mehta's possession in the presence of independent witnesses, the sources said, adding that a case has been registered against her in the Anti-Corruption Bureau Police Station (ACB PS case No.04/2022 u/s 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act).

Investigation of the case is under progress.
