GUWAHATI: The prime accused in the Lalung Gaon murder incident was arrested by Garchuk police from the Lalmati area on Friday night. The accused, identified as Somen Goswami (the husband of the deceased), alias Raju (39) of Pandu, is said to have run away with his 10- to 12-year-old son after allegedly killing his wife. But police have not been able to trace the son. As per his confession, the son is kept safe in some other place. It was learned that the accused has been staying at Lalung Gaon as a tenant and moved into the rented space just two weeks ago.

A case has been registered against the accused at Garchuk Police Station (Case No. 157/23) under Section 120(b)/302/201 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). On the other hand, the victim woman has been identified as Mrinmoy Malang, alias Basanti Goswami. She was his second wife, hailing from Karbi Anglong. He married her four to five months ago. According to the police source, the accused confessed to having committed the murder. Marital discord is believed to be the motive behind the crime.

According to prior information received on June 1, at around 4 p.m., a foul smell emanated from a rented room in Lalungaon under Gorchuk Police Station. On locating the source of the smell, local people suspected it to be coming from inside the rented room. Moniram Bordoloi was the landlord of the room, House No. 10, Lalung Gaon, Police Station Gorchuk. The police immediately reached the spot and recovered the semi-decomposed dead body of a woman packed inside a steel trunk. According to initial reports, the police identified the body as that of Basanti Baishya.
