GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Thursday said that it will never accept the high power bills being generated by the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL).

This reaction came following a meeting between an AASU delegation and the Managing Director of APDCL, Rakesh Kumar at the Bijulee here.

AASU's president Dipanka Kumar Nath said that the APDCL authority accepted that there have been anomalies in power bills of late and the students' body demanded a probe into its cause. Nath said that the APDCL MD informed them that a set up a team to examine the issue of inflated power bills and assured that any excess payment paid to the APDCL will be refunded.

Nath also said that they told the APDCL MD that they won't accept the FPPPA (Fuel & Power Purchase Price Adjustment) surcharge of 30 paisa per unit for three months – August, September and October – and termed the levy as unreasonable.

AASU's general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah said that if the decision to enforce oppressive increase in power bills is not scrapped, then they will resort to a series of agitational programmes.

He said, "The APDCL has increased bills to make up for its deficit budget, but we won't accept it."

He further said that the APDCL MD informed them that a show-cause notice has been issued to the supplier in connection with the faulty readings of the newly-installed smart meters.
