2017 proves Guwahati no safe city for women

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 16: It is needless to say that Guwahati is no safe haven for women. What does not augur well is that such crimes are on the rise with nearly four crimes against women taking place in the city daily.  The City Police has provided statistics to back the statement that crimes against women in Guwahati are on the rise. Statistics speak for themselves. The year 2017 is nearing its end with an unpleasant record of crimes against women.
Till October this year, Guwahati witnessed as many as 1,092 crimes against women. This ten-month crime rate, under any rating, is too high for a city that is touted as a smart city. When computed it becomes glaring that daily over 3.6 crimes against women are taking place a day in Guwahati.
In ten months (up to October) in Guwahati as many as 14 women were murdered, 193 were kidpped or abducted, 66 were raped, 11 women died in dowry-related incidents, one murdered after rape, 138 women were molested, 590 women had to face cruel treatment from their husbands, three cases were registered under immoral trafficking (P) Act and 76 cases were registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act. Even as cases of crimes against women in November and December this year have not been taken into account, the number of crimes against women in just ten months is going to surpass the number of crimes against women in 12 months in 2016 when as many as 1098 crimes against women were recorded. There were 1155 crimes against women in 2015 and 1075 in 2014 in the city.
