72 candidates with crimil cases

GUWAHATI, April 8: As many as 72 of the 1,062 candidates fighting the Assam Assembly election in two phases have crimil cases against them. Seven per cent of the total number of candidates fighting this election have crimil cases against them this year against 10 per cent in 2011. This statistics has been revealed by Assam Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) that has alysed the self-sworn affidavits of 1,062 candidates submitted to the Election Commission of India.  The crimil cases of 57 of the 72 candidates are serious in ture. The percentage of such candidates in this election is five. The number of candidates with serious crimil cases in the 2011 polls was 37, i.e. four per cent. There has been a significant rise in the number of crorepatis fighting the Assembly election in the State this year when compared to the Assembly election in the State in 2011. As many as 237 of the total 1,062 candidates fighting the Assembly election this year are crorepatis, the percentage being 22. In the 2011 Assembly election, 120 of the total 955 candidates were crorepatis, the percentage being 13.
