AASSKU threatens to commit suicide

GUWAHATI, May 8: The All Assam Sanyogi Siksha Karmi Union (AASSKU) on Monday staged a Dispur Chalo programme in support of the fulfillment of its various demands, including reappointment of Sanyogi Siksha Karmis. During the agitation, a scuffle between the union members and security personnel took place in front of the Assam Secretariat. In the scuffle, some of the members of the Union were injured. Later, some of the union members were arrested by the police and taken to the Basistha police station. In 2005-06, the Sanyogi Siksha Karmis were given appointment on merit basis through village education committees (VECs) and tea garden education committees (TGECs). At the first stage, they were given appointment for a period of 11 months and later their service terms had been extended periodically till March 31, 2012. However, their services were termited without any prior information by the authority concerned, said union president Abdul Kalam.  The union members also held discussions with authorities concerned on several occasions demanding their job security but they did not receive anything except promises.

They also threatened the government to commit suicide en masse by jumping into the Brahmaputra on May 24.
