GUWAHATI, Nov 4: The All Assam Students Union (AASU) released a compilation, an Mp3 of Bhupen Hazarika’s songs, which had been performed live by 34 selected best singers of different colleges and universities of Assam on the occasion of  Hazarika’s 90th birthday celebration, at Swahid Nyas today.

“A rare persolity like Bhupen Hazarika is hard to find in modern Assam. I grew up by listening to his songs and knew about music. It would be wrong to categorize him as an Assamese artiste. He was a people’s artiste. Connection with Paul Robson made him an intertiol artiste. The Nobel Award would be inferior to a stalwart like him. His power of usage of words in his lyrics and the enticing quality of his voice shake people’s hearts and cleanse minds,” Dibrugarh University Vice Chancellor Alok Kumar Buragohain said.

“Hazarika’s message is yet to reach every corner of the world, and it is the responsibility of every Assamese to do that. Accordingly, Dibrugarh University is all set to incorporate Hazarika’s works and his life in the syllabus. The Academic Council of the university has already approved it,” Buragohain added.

Singer Lakhi Goswami and Actor Biju Phukan were also present on the occasion.

Like previous years on the occasion of Bhupen Hazarika’s death anniversary the AASU will also take part in the tribute ceremony in the morning and will light 10,000 earthen lamps at evening under the statue of Bhupen Hazarika at Dighalipukhuri on November 5.

“Though the Maestro is not present among us physically yet his works will inspire our tiol identity to move forward on a strong note. Following Hazarika’s message, thinking and vision the tiol identity of Assamese will move towards the right path,” AASU president Dipangka Kumar th said.
