Actor-director Majidka no more

GUWAHATI, Sept 24: Veteran Assamese actor and director Abdul Majid passed away at the age of 86 in a hospital in Dispur around 9:30 am on Sunday. He was admitted to the hospital a few days back.

Born in 1931 in Jorhat, Abdul Majid, fondly called as Majidka by his colleagues, started his career as an actor in Jorhat in 1950 in drama. He had his film debut in Ronga Police, directed by Nip Barua in 1958. He also directed many films – Chameli Memsaab (1975), Morom Trish (1968), Bahansha (1977), Banjui (1978), Pukon (1981) and Uttarkal (1990), to me a few. Majid acted in more than 40 films in different roles, besides directing many TV serials.

In 1975, his film Chameli Memsaab won the tiol Film Awards – the best music direction award for Dr Bhupen Hazarika as well as the best Assamese feature film award. Besides that he also won the best direction award for Assamese television serial mghoria. In 1996, the Assam Government honoured him with ‘Bishnu Prasad Rabha’ Award. In 1966, Abdul Majid was felicitated by the Axam Xahitya Xabha for his drama chor.

State Governor Banwarilal Purohit led the State in paying tribute to the veteran filmmaker. In a message, the Governor prayed to the Almighty for eterl peace to the departed soul of Majid.  Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Fince Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, State Industries and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, Cultural Affairs Minister ba Kumar Doley, State BJP president Ranjit Kumar Dass, AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal, AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya, president Dipanko Kumar th and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Chief Minister’s media adviser Hrishikesh Goswami, Assam Ga Parisad president Atul Bora, leaders of the Assam Juva Parisad, MP Bhubaneswar Kalita, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee leaders, leaders of the Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX), leaders  of Sar Sapori Xahitya Parishad, North East Students’ Organization (NESO), All Guwahawati Students’ Union (AGSU), Jyoti Chitraban chairman Pabitra Margherita, among others, condoled the sudden demise of the eminent filmmaker.
