Adopt cleanliness as way of life, Sonowal tells students

GUWAHATI, Oct 2: Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal today took part in a colourful function organized by Sarba Siksha Abhiyan, Assam and Secondary Education Department, Government of Assam at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, Khapara in the city on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.

The Chief Minister said that following the ideals of non-violence and cleanliness advocated by Mahatma Gandhi is of paramount importance in modern society and he urged the students to aspire to become good human beings as well as good students.  He urged the students to practice cleanliness in all spheres of life and also to encourage others in the family to adopt cleanliness as a way of life.

Reiterating that only clean thoughts and actions can help one attain true happiness in life, Sonowal said that Gandhiji’s teachings of cleanliness and hygiene in day-to-day life are important values to be imbibed by the students as Gandhiji considered cleanliness to be next to godliness.

Sharing his own childhood experiences Sonowal said that during his school days in his tive village in Dibrugarh he was entrusted with cleaning his classroom by his teachers and that had cultivated a sense of cleanliness in him.  He urged the teachers to inspire the students to commit themselves to the cause of environment by planting trees in school campuses and also to take special care in keeping the school toilets clean in the spirit of Swaccha Bharat Abhiyan.

Education Minister Himanta Bishwa Sarma, who was also present on the occasion, said that as part of Gandhi Jayanti celebration in all districts of the state, quiz competitions, book fairs, science exhibitions have been organized for the school students and centrally these progammes have been organized at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, Khapara.  He also said that an essay writing competition about Gandhiji’s life and teachings would be organized among the students of all the schools present on the occasion on November 2 and the first prize winners of the competition will get a chance to interact persolly with the Chief Minister.  Chief Secretary VKPipersenia, SSA MD Aru Rajouria were present on the occasion, among others.
