AHRC orders probe into death of Karimganj jail inmate

GUWAHATI, Dec 15: Taking suo moto cognizance of the report published in the newspapers regarding the death of a life convict while serving out his sentences in the District Jail, Karimganj, the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has ordered the District Magistrate to conduct an inquiry into the incident and has asked State government to pay immediate interim relief of an amount of Rs One lakh to the next-of-kin of the deceased.
A single bench of the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) comprising of Tarun Phookan, Member, directed the issue of Notice to the District Magistrate, Karimganj, to cause a magisterial enquiry to be conducted into the incident and fix responsibility, if any, on the part of the Superintendent, District Jail Karimganj, Habibur Rahman Borbhuyan and submit the report thereof to the State Commission within 30 days of receipt of the Notice. In its order in (AHRC Case no. 1877/10/16-17), the Bench deemed it fit and proper under the facts and the circumstances of the incident to recommend to the Government of Assam for paying immediate interim relief in terms of money to the next of kin of the deceased tu Mazumdar as per provision of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, and recommended to the State government through Chief Secretary to pay immediate interim relief of Rs One lakh to the kin of tu Mazumdar.
