AHRC worried

Guwahati, February 23: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has rued that the government and police officials are less concerned to answer the notifications issued by the Commission about violation of human rights.  "We are only the watchdog of the government to look after whether the government and police officials are following their rules or not and violating any human rights or not. Though we send the notification to an accused party 3-4 times, only after sending summons the party answers the commission. This processes delays the procedures of disposing of the cases," said Tarun Phookan, member, AHRC.  Phookan also said: "We can only recommend the government about the punishment and the steps should be taken by the authority concerned. We cannot take steps on our own in any case which again confuses many people." The Commission has a specified rule to perform regarding cases of human rights violation. Under this, the Commission has to receive all type of cases which violate human rights and also the complaints of complaints.
