AIUDF slams Dispur over NRC update

BY OUR STAFF REPORTER
GUWAHATI, Jan 19:  The AIUDF has demanded the State government to make its stand clear on NRC update. Addressing a press conference here today, AIUDF general secretary Abdur Rahim Khan said the NRC updating works has been stopped completely after the BJP government taking charge in the State. “Before Assembly elections, the BJP had said that NRC update work is the top priority of the party, but after coming to power, the BJP government has halted the NRC update works,” Khan said.  He alleged the state government has not released salaries of the employees of the NRC update work as a result of which many NRC sava kendras are going to be closed. Dispur set up NRC sewa kendras across the state to assist citizens with the documents required to fill up the application forms to include their mes in the updated NRC. He alleged Dispur is violating the SC’s directives while updating the NRC. “Now, the state government has raised question over modalities, which was fixed as per Supreme Court directive. It has now pushed for new modalities,” he claimed. The state cabinet sub-committee on NRC has pushed for new modalities to ‘ensure that no foreigners are included in the register’. Khan further alleged the Centre sanctioned Rs 908 crore for NRC update work but so far only Rs 335 crore has been released.  He said Dispur has not released its fund of Rs 100 crore.
