GUWAHATI, April 17: Defying all predictions by political pundits that the AIUDF will have to suffer huge loss in this Assembly election this year, party president Badruddin Ajmal today put a brave face and said that his party was going to play a crucial role in the formation of the government in the State.

In a statement issued to the press today, Ajmal said: “The people of the State responded positively to the call of the AIUDF and voted in its favour. According to our own alysis, we’re going to win 40-45 seats this time around. We’ll play a crucial role in the formation of the government in the State.”

Ajmal thanked the Election Commission of India for holding the Assembly election in the State peacefully, in both the phases. He also thanked the people of the State for the heavy voter turnout in both the phases.

Some political pundits are of the opinion that most of the minority people of the State have opted to the Congress rather than the AIUDF. They also predict that the number of seats to be won by the AIUDF that won 18 seats in 2011 may be reduced to a single-digit figure this year. Though the voter turnout in minority-domited areas was very high in this Assembly election in the State, there was a large-scale vote swing from the AIUDF to the Congress.
