GUWAHATI, Oct 15: AIUDF president and Dhubri MP Badruddin Ajmal today hailed the Union Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) sanctioning Rs 4,400 crore for the sealing of India-Bangladesh border.
In a statement issued to the press today, Ajmal said that the sealing of the India-Bangladesh border will solve the problem of infiltration from across the border. This work should go parallel to the NRC update work, he said.
"Sealing of the India-Bangladesh border has been our demand since the inception of the AIUDF, but the Centre and the State Government have not been doing it over the years. However, the NDA government at the Centre has now set a deadline of 2019 for the completion of border sealing work. The work should be completed within the stipulated time. Leaving political interest aside, Dispur should cooperate with the Centre in this work," Ajmal said.
On Chi constructing dams in the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra, Ajmal said: "We oppose it vehemently. It's strange that the Centre is yet to react to it and take it up with Chi. Prime Minister rendra Modi had been to Chi, but he came back without raising this issue with his counterpart in the neighbouring country. This is unfortute. The Centre should talk to Chi on this issue soon and stop the construction of the dams in the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra."
