Ajmal pooh-poohs Sonowal

GUWAHATI, Jan 29: Celebrations with bursting of crackers mark the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhavan in Guwahati today with the projection of Union Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs and State BJP president Sarbanda Sonowal as the Chief Ministerial candidate for the forthcoming Assam Assembly polls by the BJP Parliamentary Committee yesterday. As though to dampen the spirit, AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal today twitted in the social media that the people of Assam would, in no way, choose an RSS and VHP-baked candidate as their chief minister.

“My firm belief is that people of Assam will never let an RSS and VHP backed candidate to become Chief Minister of Assam. In the land of Shankar-Azaan, a commully driven party’s candidate harbouring to be its CM is like living in fool’s paradise,” Ajmal twitted this morning.

Meanwhile, the BJP leaders and cadres in Assam registered their support to Sonowal as the Chief Ministerial candidate of the party for the coming Assembly elections in the State through bursting of crackers, distribution of sweets among friends and others since last night. The office-bearers and supporters at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhavan are an elated lot with the announcement. The scene is no different at Dibrugarh, where Sonowal hails from. Party workers said it was known to them, and the announcement made yesterday was just a formality. “We’ve gained inspirations by the announcement,” they said.
