Ajmal says gaon incident unfortute

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 16: AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal has termed the incident of police firing to quell agitators at Raha in gaon district as unfortute. The police had to fire, besides baton charge and firing tear gas to disperse agitators when they were protesting against the selection of site for the proposed AIIMS near Guwahati, bypassing Raha. In a statement issued to the press today, Ajmal said that suppressing democratic agitations by lathi-charge, teargas shelling and by firing in the air is not fair. Ajmal demanded compensation to the killed and injured in the agitation.  This is the first firing by a government that is yet to complete two months.

The State Government’s decisions on sensitive issues like auctioning oilfields and hiking VAT have been strongly opposed by the people of the State, leading to agitations, he said. “It’s unfortute that instead of trying to go deep into the wishes and aspirations of the people, Dispur has opted suppressive measures,” he added.
