Ambubachi Mela: Grand preparations

GUWAHATI, June 20: The Kamrup Metropolitan District Administration has made an elaborate arrangement for visiting pilgrims and other visitors to the Ambubachi Mela slated from June 22.
Accommodation facilities for the visiting pilgrims have been made at as many as eight venues with proper back-end support system. According to a statement issued to the press today, the district administration said that as many as 600 toilets/ urils, 1,000 water taps, proper sanitation and hygiene facilities with GMC staff, 2,000 volunteers, dedicated bhandaras for the food supply and drinking water, a detailed crowd magement plan, a detailed security plan etc., have been put in place.
This year the Chief Minister has directed the district administration to specially monitor use of plastic etc. Non-biodegradable plastic use will be restricted in and around Nilachal Hill. The district administration will promote biodegradable and eco-friendly materials only, the statement said.
Entire Nilachal Hill will be treated as no-tobacco zone. Excise and Police personnel will enforce it. Desigted places for the parking, embarking and disembarking will be done.
Special emphasis will be there to take care of Nilachal wildlife. Regulation of street vending will be there from Bhanralumukh to Maligaon and from Kamakhya to Bhuaneswari hilltop.
A detailed health magement plan with emergency aid will be in place at all vantage points.Emergency disaster response and rescue planning with DDMA, SDRF, NDRF and others are there. River patrolling and protection by NDRF and River Police personnel is on. Proper illumition and lighting has been done by the GMC and the tourism department. Special arrangements at Basistha, Umanda, Sukleswar temples have also been made.
ASTC will ply a fleet 100 special buses in and around Nilachal. Special arrangements for the elders, women and children are also there.
Physically challenged pilgrims will be taken care of.
