Amiya deserts Congress, joins BJP

GUWAHATI, April 17: The Congress in Assam looks very glum as it has been through real bad hair days, one after another, since 2014 Lok Sabha polls. At a time when the poll losing streak of the party sees no end, the party has many an MLA being grilled by the CBI in connection with the Saradha scam. As if to cap it all, its MLA Rumi th has been arrested by the CBI for her alleged links with a notorious car lifter. As though to hit the party where it hurts most, Congress leader and former All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) general secretary Amiya Kumar Bhuyan joined the BJP today.

At a meeting in the BJP office at Hengrabari in Guwahati today, former AASU general secretary Amiyo Kumar Bhuyan joined the BJP. He quit the Congress yesterday. He had joined the Congress straight from the AASU in 2005 soon after his resigtion from the premier students’ body of the state.

According to sources, Bhuyan will seek BJP ticket to fight the 2016 Assembly election from Bihpuria Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC). Meanwhile, Haren Deori, a Deori leader who is very close to a number of Congress leaders, also joined the BJP today.

Meanwhile, BJP president Amit Shah is heading for Guwahati where he is going to address a rally on April 26 so as to boost morale of party leaders and workers in the poll-bound state. This is his first visit to Guwahati as president of the party. On April 27, Shah will have a series of meetings with BJP functiories in the state on organizatiol matters.
